11 BEST WATCHES UNDER $200 (Review) 2020

February 18, 2020

Finding a quality watch on a budget can be daunting to a new collector. The world of watches is wide and varies wildly with all sorts of crazy designs and lofty brands, and it can be overwhelming to choose which ones deliver the most value. The Spring Bar has collated the best watches under $200.

When one first embarks on the journey of seeking a watch, the social media savvy upstart collector finds oneself wallowing in a large pool of suggestions online: brands to look out for, in-fashion watch types and when they must be used, and even specific watches that must be had. Watches on a budget are spoken of much more modestly as affordable watches are often misjudged to be among the myriad of low-quality fashion watches, which were mostly made with the fast fashion industry in mind.

This list is made to satisfy not only budget concerned watch enthusiasts, but also those who hold quality and value for money to be important. The list is handpicked using the following criteria: design, durability, functionality and, of course, affordability. These are all very affordable watches under $200, but are distinguished among all others through their stand-out function, design, or the reputation quality of the company that produced them.

These days, less people purchase watches specifically for telling the time, rather, they purchase watches as an accessory to their daily outfits. This is the reason most watch enthusiasts gravitate to very popular and far more expensive brands. The affordable watches here will not have the same sophistication, complication, or even wow-factor that more expensive watches have, but sound quality and simply beautiful design work coupled with a price the most austere of us can afford make these watches more than worth the purchase.

1 Timex Marlin TW2R47900ZV

See More Reviews

The first of our affordable watches under $200 is the Timex Marlin. For its current price of around $180, this watch speaks a lot about its American origin: simple elegance. Its mid-century dial design and sleek black leather strap fit excellently with its manually wound movement.

The case is small at 34mm relative to other contemporary men’s watches which are usually around 36mm. However, the small size blends perfectly with the mid-century inspired design. This petite beauty belongs on this list due to the classic design it offers at such a low price point.

Timex is a U.S. watch company that started in 1854 as the Waterbury Clock Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. Since then they have been making quality affordable American timepieces. Timex isn’t usually discussed among the brands with a long legacy of quality as often as the pricey Swiss brands like Rolex do, but when affordable watches are sought, no list is complete without Timex.

The Citizen Promaster Diver is an affordable watch produced by another Japanese brand, Citizen, in direct competition with Orient and giant Seiko, with no less competence and heritage than other Japanese watchmakers. The Citizen Promaster Diver is its homage to the ever-popular classic Rolex Submariner design.

The Citizen Promaster Diver is a 45mm dive watch in a stainless steel case and bracelet and covered with a mineral crystal. As with other dive watches of its kind, the Promaster Diver has a water resistance of 200M. What makes it unique among the others on our list, is that it uses the proprietary Citizen Eco-Drive movement which is primarily powered by light – requiring its secondary power source, a battery, to be replaced only once every 20 years rather than the typical 2 – 3 years.

The Casio MDV is an affordable watch from reputed Japanese electronics manufacturer, Casio. 5 Tissot Everytime T109.610.16.031.00

See More Reviews

The Tissot Everytime is Swiss brand Tissot’s foray into affordable watches. Swiss watches are famously high quality and historical brands like 1850s Tissot offer pedigree that watchmakers from other countries, even fast-growing Japanese brands, are finding hard to compete with.

The only problem with Swiss watchmakers are a general shortage of every man options that can be affordable to working men who are interested in timepieces but can only do so on a budget. Enter the Tissot Everytime which offers Swiss quality while maintaining a price point low enough to allow people with lower budgets to afford.

The Tissot Everytime is a quartz powered watch with a minimalist dial with the Tissot brand emblazoned clearly on the watch face. This 42mm watch is encased in stainless steel with a leather strap, and is protected by scratch-proof sapphire crystal. The class lent by the Tissot brand to this affordable watch is enough for it to be worthy of its $150 price point.

6 Swatch Sistem51 YIS401G

See More Reviews

Swiss watchmaking giant Swatch had its beginnings in the mechanical watch crisis of the 1980s. They shone as one of the only Swiss brands that braved competing with the monumental rise of very affordable Japanese quartz movements. When the dust settled, Swatch ended up controlling a large chunk of the Swiss watch industry including respected watchmakers like Omega, Breguet, and even previously mentioned Tissot.

Swatch Sistem51 is an affordable watch by the Swatch brand itself combining experience and resources from its multiple subsidiaries. It is a 42mm automatic watch in a stainless steel case and a plastic glass. It is eye catching with its breathtaking geometric dial design in a blue backdrop. Like most affordable watches on this list, the Sistem51 is a rather simple watch, but the Swiss quality infused by Swatch and beautiful design work justifies the price.

7 Casio Databank EAW-DBC-611-1DF

See More Reviews

Before Casio became famous in the watchmaking industry for its G-Shock line of sports watches, Casio gained renown for its line of digital watches in the 80s. With the resurgence of retro cool, sci-fi and throwback designs in the 2010s, digital watches from decades ago are becoming relevant once more. This comeback is the reason the Casio Databank earned a spot on this list.

The Casio Databank is a rectangular digital watch cased in stainless steel with an LCD covered in mineral crystal, and as with the original retro digital watches from the 80s, it is powered by quartz. It has a small calculator touchpad right beneath the LCD screen with which the Casio Databank can be used not only as a 8-digit calculator but also a memo pad and a place to save dates, names and contact information.

8 Citizen Diver BN0151

See More Reviews

The Citizen NY0040 is very similar to its fellow Citizen timepiece, the Citizen Promaster Diver, but is Citizen’s direct response to the immensely popular SKX007 by rival Seiko. Another homage to the Rolex Submariner, the Citizen NY0040 is an awesome automatic dive watch powered by Citizen’s very own automatic movement. The in-house automatic movement alone is enough to make the NY0400 worth the price.

This affordable 42mm watch is encased in stainless steel, covered by mineral crystal, and has a rubber strap. It has a day/date complication at the 3 o’clock position and a unidirectional rotating bezel. The Citizen NY0040 earns a spot on our list as one of the very few high quality automatic diver’s watches that go for below $200. Being made by such a trusted brand as Citizen ensures it’s worth the while of any enthusiast.

9 Victorinox Infantry 241474XG

Victorinox is a Swiss brand well-known for its high quality field gear including Swiss knives, luggage, and watches. The quality of their goods are held to be at such high standards that the Swiss military uses some Victorinox products in their general issue. The same can be expected from the affordable Victorinox Infantry, which, against the grain of most Victorinox products, is a dress watch rather than a field watch.

It is a 40mm quartz powered watch encased in stainless steel and covered in a scratch proof sapphire crystal, and has a beautiful black leather watch perfect for formal functions. Unlike most dress watches, the Victorinox Infantry has a 100m water resistance. At only around $120, this dress watch heavy-duty enough to be on the field is more than worth the money.

10 Seiko SSB SSB297P1

See More Reviews

Seiko is the most famous and most historic brand hailing from Japan. Originally Seikosha in the early 1900s their long history has taken them from WWII to the quartz watch revolution, to the craze for Seikos today. In fact, had this list been created 5 years ago, it would have included the most popular Seiko watch to date, the Seiko SKX007. However, the insane demand for the SKX007 caused it’s prices to more than double in less than half a decade.

The Seiko SSB is a worthy sub-$200 option for those interested in the brand heritage and quality Seiko has to offer. It is a rather large 44mm watch built on a stainless steel case and a quartz movement. Its functions include a chronograph with millisecond subdials and lap-timers, all presented wonderfully on an elegant white watch face reminiscent of the Rolex Daytona.  The Seiko SSB offers excellent value for its awesome design and amazing functionality all for only $128.

11 Graf Zeppelin Count Watch 7642-5 LZ127

See More Reviews

The final watch on this list is the Graf Zeppelin Count Watch coming from acclaimed German watchmaker, Graf Zeppelin. While German watch brands don’t get as much fanfare as Swiss watch brands do, most German watch companies use techniques and even hire watchmakers from their neighbors across the border. This allows German brands to have timepieces with almost similar quality without the added cost of holding that Swiss-made branding.

The Count Watch is an affordable field watch built inside a stainless steel case and a mineral crystal and built on a quartz movement. It holds the unique distinction among the watches on this list to have a GMT function, which is rare even for quartz watches at higher price points.

The astonishingly designed dial common in most Zeppelin watches is the cherry on top for this solid field watch that can be stand-out accessory even in more formal events. The quartz movement is the only thing holding this watch back from being on par with pricier watches, but it must be that very movement that keeps it at such a ridiculously low price.

Key Features to Consider In Buying a Watch Under $200

In this guide, we compared the best options for affordable watches under $200 in terms of design, durability, functionality and affordability.

  • Design: When purchasing watches under $200, or any budget in fact, the first criteria the majority of watch enthusiasts consider is the design. It is the factor that determines the perceived quality of the timepiece apart from the brand itself. As previously mentioned, the very purpose of wearing watches is to add or even give a wearer’s outfit personality. It is primarily the design of a watch that determines that personality. The design of the watch can also immediately showcase its value; there is a world of difference between an affordable watch and a watch that looks cheap.

  • Durability: There is a world of difference between an affordable watch and a watch that looks cheap and feels cheap. Durability is not merely perceived quality, but the quality of a timepiece itself. It is a close second to design when it comes to criteria in choosing a watch as it is the factor that line that divides a watch made exclusively for and only for fast fashion, and a watch that actually intends to leave a legacy. A beautifully designed watch can turn to trash in a very short amount of time if durability isn’t considered. Survivability is a very important criteria in any affordable watch list.

  • Functionality: The abilities and functions of a watch is merely a bonus criteria, but nevertheless worth mentioning, in considering affordable watches. Functionality is the factor of what else a watch can do apart from telling time: like telling the date, a stopwatch, or even a calculator. Nearly all functionalities possible in even the most expensive timepieces are now available on a smartphone, but additional functionality means additional value for money. It wouldn’t hurt to have GPS or chronograph on your watch especially when you don’t want to take out your phone.

  • Affordability: The main consideration and main factor of this list is that the watches listed be under $200. There are a very, very wide variety of watches available for consumption at a $200 budget, but only a few of them have quality high enough or heritage trustworthy enough to be even worth $200. There are a lot of watches these days that try to increase value by offering ridiculous prices only to slash them down by 75% to drum up demand. There are some watches that price $200 for a $25 quality watch, increasing value only through widespread social media marketing strategies. The watches on this list were carefully chosen to be affordable at the right value for the price.

Why do people buy inexpensive watches?

People buy inexpensive watches for the same reason people buy inexpensive cars or clothes: practicality. Some simply couldn’t afford luxury watches or have no space in it in their budgets because they have to spend on other needs. Some could afford luxury watches easily, but either too pragmatic and don’t see it as a priority or are uninterested and don’t understand the appeal of owning luxury items. Having a large market for inexpensive watches proves that people definitely are interested in watches, but are inclined to more affordable options.

What makes some watches expensive, and what makes some affordable?

The price of a watch is highly dependent on the brand and the machinery being used by a watch. Some expensive watches are produced by brands and companies with very long legacies of horology and selling luxury timepieces to the creme de la creme of society long ago. For example, Breguet was commissioned by Count von Fersen to produce a watch for Queen Marie Antoinette back in the mid-1700s. Some have merely built a very solid reputation through the decades as a dependable watch that can stand the test of time; like Rolex and Omega. Apart from brand, expensive watches usually use extremely complex mechanical movements in order to power specific functions even without battery power. Some affordable watches have great heritage too, but are mostly marketed towards mass consumption like Seiko and Orient. Affordable watches usually use simple mechanical movements or even quartz batteries.

What makes a watch worth it?

What makes a watch worth it is highly subjective to the one who intends to purchase it. At the end of the day people will always have their own criteria to consider in order to assign value to a given piece. This list attempts to suggest criteria new enthusiasts may want to look to to guide them in purchasing affordable watches. These suggestions attempt to provide a different perspective than sentimental value, marketed value, or emotional appeal.
