7 Best G-Shock Watches for the Military 2020 (Review)

Austin Tinimbang
December 12, 2019

Casio’s G-Shock product line has always been regarded as a watch fit for military service. Incredibly reliable in tough situations, these watches were made with the purpose of resisting shock and surviving the harshest of conditions Our team at the Spring Bar collated the 7 best G-Shock watches for the Military for 2020.

The G-shock was introduced to the world in 1983 by the Japanese company Casio as a response to an increasingly active world. It required a wristwatch that could survive the rough and tumble of modern life. It was built with three goals in mind: a 10-year battery life, a water resistance of at least 10 bar (100m), and the durability to survive a fall of 10 feet. This concept was widely known as Casio’s “Triple 10” resistance. The G-Shock has evolved so much from the 1983 models, but the very purpose for which it was made still makes it one of the best watches for the modern military.

To guide this list in searching for the 7 Best G-Shocks for the Military,  it will be focused on 5 different things: functionality, durability, design, compliance to military standards, and affordability. Functionality is the factor which focuses on the different things a G-Shock can do apart from telling time. G-Shocks are all extremely functional, but this list is narrowed down to G-Shocks with the most functions fit for the military for the right price. Durability is the most basic but is also important as it is necessary to find G-Shocks that are tough enough to serve with. Design and compliance to standards go hand in hand because a military man requires a G-Shock that is easy to understand and makes one proud to wear it without having to let it go for compliance issues. Affordability because the goal is to find G-Shocks that more military men can enjoy.

The military has standard-issue watches, but soldiers are allowed to wear watches of their choice provided that it follows regulations. Standard issue G-Shocks were purposefully not included in this list to showcase other watches that can go well with your uniform.

1 Casio G-Shock Mudmaster GG B100 1A3

See More Reviews

The Casio G-Shock Mudmaster GG B100 1A3 is a durable watch encased in resin protected by a carbon core guard structure. It has the standard G-shock shock resistance with the added bonus of mud resistance. It’s a heavy watch at around half a pound, but the functions it comes with are worth the extra weight.

The G-Shock Mudmaster GG B100 1A3 has excellent functions for military purposes. It has a mobile link function which allows you to easily and automatically adjust time and functions through your phone; a feature great for deployments which allow smartphones. It allows you to estimate your location and the conditions of the field using its digital compass, altimeter, automatic log data for altitudes, barometer, and thermometer functions. It also has world time for up to 38 time zones which allows you to tell the time halfway across the world.

It is a completely quartz watch which can be a disadvantage when you forget to replace batteries in between deployments. Standard G-Shock watches, however, have an estimated battery life of more than 2 years, so the likelihood of losing power is very low.

The Mudmaster’s carbon core guard structure provides added shock resistance and heat resistance to the watch. Carbon fibre material usually makes the watch lighter, but Casio used the carbon case instead to make room for the weight brought by the functionality.

2 Casio G-shock Mudmaster GG1000-1A5

See More Reviews

The Casio G-shock Mudmaster GG1000-1A5 is another Mudmaster well-suited for the military. The primary difference it has to the GG B100 1A3 is the GG1000-1A5’s stainless steel and resin composite case. This makes it slightly less durable than the previous but allows it to be almost half the weight at only ⅔ of the price.

The G-shock Mudmaster GG1000-1A5 is still shock-resistant and mud-resistant—making it perfect for wet conditions. However, the lower price also comes with reduced functionality, doing away with the locational and environmental condition functions found in the previous watches. All it has is the basic timer and calendar functions like the countdown timer and a fully automatic calendar.

This watch makes the list because of its toughness and mud resistance, and combined to its very light weight, the G-shock Mudmaster GG1000-1A5 is enough for the needs of the no-nonsense military man.

3 Casio G-Shock MTG MTG-G1000D-1A2JF

See More Reviews

The Casio G-Shock MTG MTG-G1000D-1A2JF is definitely a premium pick. Despite its steep price, however, it is still a top contender for the title of the most cost-efficient watch. It’s a solar-powered quartz watch encased in a durable stainless steel and resin composite case. It has the standard shock resistance and water resistance of 200m.

What makes this G-Shock MTG stand out are its unbeatable functions—particularly its GPS calibration and time calibration functions. GPS calibration means that the MTG can receive accurate position information every day. It allows you to know your exact location without the help of a smartphone. Time calibration, on the other hand, means that the watch itself adjusts automatically to your timezone without the need for a wifi signal.

Combined with its use of solar power and other standard time and date functions, the GPS and time Calibration of the MTG makes this beast of a watch unbeatable for military use. This is a heavy watch—both on the pocket on the wrist—but the functionality outweighs any cons we may find in this G-Shock.

4 Casio G-Shock Rangeman GPR-B1000-1JR

See More Reviews

The Casio G-Shock Rangeman GPR-B1000-1JR is aptly named the Rangeman for its GPS navigation and environmental conditions functions. The GPS navigation system tracks the user’s location in any part of the globe. The environmental conditions functions like altimeter, barometer, and thermometer also allow one to estimate the weather conditions surrounding them.

The GPS navigation function works in conjunction with point memory, meaning the watch can remember previously designated positions. This information can allow your watch to guide you when backtracking to safety. These functions make this G-Shock excellent for military men who may find themselves in tight situations where they lose track of their position.

The G-shock Rangeman is a solar powered quartz encased in stainless steel composite resin with a watch face protected by sapphire crystal. These features promise a long battery life and durability.

Our team recommends this to be the best G-Shock watch for the military as it provides a similar GPS navigation system as the MTG while being only half the price. This watch combines all the durability and functionality necessary in any G-Shock a military man might want to use.

7 Casio G-Shock GA GA100L-1A

The Casio G-Shock GA GA100L-1A is the perfect watch for the military men working on more technical support roles—specifically ones that require a lot of exposure to powerful magnets. Certain equipment like computers, aircraft, and tanks use magnets in their internal structures that could mean the demise of your watch.

Repetitive exposure to magnets—no matter how strong or weak—could damage the inner workings of your G-Shock. The G-Shock GA GA100L-1A has built-in magnet resistance that will allow you to use your watch while working near magnetized hazards. It is also very lightweight which allows for dexterity and wrist mobility.

The G-Shock GA is the best value pick for the simple reason that it provides the most basic functions and resistances the G-Shock series offers while keeping the price below $100. It’s truly a bang-for-the-buck option.

Best G-Shock Watches for the Military Buyer’s Guide and FAQs

Key Features to Consider In Buying a G-Shock Watch for the Military

In this guide, we compared the best options that fall under G-Shock watches for the military in terms of functionality, durability, design, and affordability.

  • Functionality includes the following: (a) functions your watch should have apart from telling the time, (b) movement or how your watch is powered, (c) water resistance or the depth of water or water pressure your watch can survive, (e) different resistances, and (d) location and environmental condition functions.

The resistances of the G-Shock apart from shock resistance is important in considering its functionality for the different roles a military man plays in the field. Mud resistance and magnet resistance can be vital for the survival of the watch depending on the conditions. Location and environmental conditions aren’t available in all of the G-Shocks on the list but can be a very helpful tool in different situations.

  • Durability is a factor that primarily focuses on three things: (a) the glass or crystal, (b) the material of the watch case, (c) the strap, bracelet, or band, and (d) basic shock resistance.

The crystal is the part of the watch that protects the dial. When we consider crystals, we consider the scratch-resistance or toughness of the material. The watch case, on the other hand, is very important since it is the part that houses the movement of the watch and protects the mechanical and electronic parts of the watch from various elements. Meanwhile, the strap is the part of the watch that holds it on the wrist.

  • Design includes: (a) material feel or weight of the watch and (b) simplicity and functionality of the watch face.

Material feel or weight is necessary for considering the best G-Shock watches for the military since being part of the military assumes heavy amounts of daily activity. When deciding a watch, a military man should be able to know what is best for the purpose they set out to use – functionality or mobility. Simplicity and functionality are important for following regulations and for the ease of reading the functions of the watch.

  • Affordability is one of the most important considerations for the watches on this list. It limits the scope of our search for the best G-Shock watches for the military and allows us to pick out watches with the most value for money. Without considering affordability, we will be having high-powered G-Shocks more powerful than what we have on the list, but could only be availed by a limited number of people.

Are watches allowed in the military?

There are standard-issue watches provided to different military personnel, but military men are allowed to use their own watches as long as these watches follow regulations, should their commanding officer allow it. In the US Army, for example, Army Regulation law 670-1 1-14 A dictates that soldiers may use a watch with their uniform. However, watches must have no logos, patterns, or obtrusive markings—in short, plain watches only.

Why is it better to use quartz watches than watches with mechanical or automatic movements when firing a gun?

Mechanical or automatic movements can be damaged by the shock of weapon recoil. These movements are powered by a complex set of cogs, gears, and weights that may be sensitive to this type of shock. Quartz movements, on the other hand, are less sensitive as it is powered by a battery. The G-Shock’s built-in shock resistance allows for the protection of its movement even while being exposed to recoil.

How long do G-Shock Batteries last?

Most G-Shock batteries last for two years, and some models may even require charging for certain functions. Solar-powered quartz batteries usually last around the same lifespan but will not require charging for the powering of certain functions.
